Former SC Congressman to Present the Conservative Case for Solar Growth at GA Solar Holiday Luncheon

Don’t miss former U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, Keynote Speaker for the GA Solar Holiday Luncheon at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2016, at Villa Christina, 4000 Summit Boulevard, Atlanta, GA 30319.

Rep. Barrett is the founder of the Palmetto Conservative Solar Coalition, the newly formed alliance dedicated to removing barriers to solar and promoting free-market principles that will allow solar to support energy independence in South Carolina.

Solar in South Carolina has grown by 303% in the past year, according to SEIA, ranking seventh among the 50 states for solar as a percent of new electric capacity.

Former Congressman Gresham Barrett represented the 3rd Congressional District of South Carolina from 2003 until 2011. He also served South Carolina for six years in the SC House of Representatives. Congressman Barrett is a native of Westminster, South Carolina, where he resides with his wife Natalie.

Earlier this year, Rep. Barrett created the Palmetto Conservative Solar Coalition, which works to provide solutions to critical issues facing utilities and solar companies in South Carolina. These include making sure homeowners are not taxed at a higher rate because they choose solar while also working with businesses and utilities to continue South Carolina’s net metering policy.

Rep. Barrett is a fresh and compelling voice for solar at this critical juncture in solar market development in the Southeast and beyond. Come meet this important ally and hear his message while celebrating the great year 2016 has been for solar in Georgia!

Solar Advocate Finalists are Chosen!

Winner to be announced at December 15 Holiday Luncheon at Villa Christina

The nominations are in and the finalists have been selected. Who will receive the 2016 Solar Advocate Award from the Georgia Solar Energy Association?

They are.....

Jeff Pratt and Kerry Sibley, Green Power EMC - Cooperative Solar is the latest effort of GA's Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMCs) to bring affordable, reliable solar energy to members across the state. Cooperative Solar is a unique model that allows consumers to purchase blocks of solar energy on their monthly utility bill, often with no contract. This makes solar available at a reasonable cost and reduces many barriers, such as shade, roof access, and system maintenance and management. So far, the program has brought solar energy to almost 4,000 customers from 11 EMCs across the state and increased EMC solar capacity from 7.5 MW to 240 MW.

Shan Arora, Southface Solar Map and Clean Jobs Census – Shan Arora is the creator and administrator of Georgia Energy Data, an interactive map showing the location, size and other information on most of the solar installations in Georgia. He also directs the annual Clean Jobs Census that evaluates and documents the solar industry’s job growth and economic impact in Georgia. These two dynamic bodies of information have been essential to showing policymakers, civic leaders and the public what solar energy contributes to Georgia’s economy. Shan is also deeply engaged in Southface’s initiative to expand the benefits of solar to historically disadvantaged communities and nonprofit entities such as schools.

Rachel Petry, Southern Company, Project Manager for the UGA Solar Research Project - This installation is a state-of-the-art 1.25-megawatt (dc) solar research project designed for studying solar panel performance. The installation is located on a 10-acre site leased to project owner Georgia Power by the University of Georgia. The project demonstrates optimal orientation and tracking technology suited for Georgia’s climate and energy demand. Project partners include Southern Company, the Electric Power Reliability Institute (EPRI) and the University of Georgia. These partners will study performance and reliability factors to better understand regional integration of solar on the grid. The array consists of five sub arrays utilizing differing solar technologies including high-efficiency 435-watt solar panels, single-axis trackers and monitoring from SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR), SMA Tripower inverters, Sonnen dual-axis trackers and Brilliant Rack fixed-tilt racking in various configurations.

Winner will be announced at the Holiday Luncheon, December 15th at Villa Christina's.
